Guatemala is located in Central America with an area of 108 889 km2 and is bounded to the west and north by Mexico, Belize and the Gulf of Honduras, on the southeast by Honduras and El Salvador, and south by the ocean Pacific.

Guatemala has outstanding and immediate challenges including, among others: an amendment to the Electoral Law and Political Parties to promote democratic institutions and social participation; to strengthen the National System of Development Councils based system that encourages empowerment and decentralization of the state and rural development; to consolidate the rule of law, reconciliation and promoting a culture of peace; the full recognition and respect of multiculturalism, multiculturalism and the rights of indigenous and black peoples and the fight against discrimination and racism; to combate poverty and malnutrition; a Law on Integrated Rural Development that recognizes and guarantees access to land and natural resources.
